Great news!  I just received news that both the Adult Entertainment Bylaw and the Liquor License Bylaw were approved "as is" by the Attorney General's office.  Links to these bylaws are loctated in the right hand margin of this homepage under new.  It is my understanding that any application will now have to meet these bylaws or fight a legal battle to have them deemed unconstitutional.

A new link has been added to our website.  This link will help to inform residents of the issues directly and indirectly related to adult entertainment, imparticularly strip clubs.  These articles and studies are presented so that residents may understand the full impact a business of the nature would have on our community.  We have found the information to be graphic and difficult to read at times.

Last night's STM was a great meeting.  Thank you to the 200+ attendees who were able to make it, especially given the number of activities that were taking place in Mendon last night.

Eric Simpson and Bob Bevan did a great job with the presentation.  We believe their presentation along with a copy of the proposed changes enabled residents to following along and understand exactly what they were voting on.  The residents who did ask questions where terrific as well.  All questions were thoughtful and moved the process forward.  Finally, the moderator did a terrific job in keeping everyone focused and the meeting moved along at a good pace.

Both bylaws were passed unanimously.  The bylaw links have been updated to reflect the language that was decided upon last night.  The bylaws will be presented to the Attorney General's Office by the town for final approval.  This process can take up to 90 days but once the town has been informed of the AG's decision, they in turn will inform the residents.

Please remember to join us on Tuesday, October 7th at Misco School for the vote on two proposed bylaws.  We have included links to both for you to read.  There will also be a brief presentation to explain the bylaws and to answer questions.

Kudos go to every resident who attended Monday night's hearing.  It was an impressive turnout and it sent a clear message that we may be "little" but we aren't going to be a pushover.

Also, we have had an influx of volunteer offers.  Thank you very much.  We will be contacting you shortly with the next stages of our game plan.

Finally, thank you for all of your support and kind words for the many volunteers who have been working tirelessly on this effort.  We received a tremendous amount of positive feedback.

One person described the Mendon experience well and thought we'd share it.

"i have to say that this was the first town meeting i've ever been to- ever.  i moved here from manhattan two years ago.  when i tell people this, i'm always asked "why?"-- for me it's simple.  because mendon is so special.  forget about strip clubs, mendon was the anti strip mall. it's about values.  it's history.  it's life FINALLY slowed down.  the older gent who was the first townsperson to speak after the police chief was was right on.  you can't go backward from a decision like this.  there are too many towns with strip clubs, strip malls, etc to chose from in this country.  why carelessly turn mendon into one of those?"

September 7, 2008:

You may have heard that two businesses in town have recently submitted applications for Adult Entertainment licenses.  Earlier this month, Ana Vaz, owner of The End Zone, was denied a license on the grounds that her business is not located within the town’s recently adopted Adult Entertainment overlay district.  The second applicants, George and Christopher Funari, are the owners of Oak Tree Supply which is, however, located within this overlay district.  The Board of Selectmen has scheduled a hearing to discuss this application on:

September 15th at 7:30PM Henry Clough School

At this hearing, the Funaris will be making a presentation as to why the Board of Selectmen should approve their application for an Adult Entertainment license.  This will also be an opportunity for us, the townspeople of Mendon, to voice our oppositions and concerns.  For this reason, the maximum number of people in attendance will be key to showing the Board of Selectmen, as well as the Funaris that we do not welcome this type of business in our town.

If you oppose this type of business, now is the time to get involved.  While it doesn’t seem possible that something like this could happen in Mendon, it is and could come to pass without the help of all who oppose it.  Please mark your calender and attend the hearing on September 15th.

August 10, 2008:

We need more volunteers to help get the word out to our Mendon neighborhoods.  Many Mendon residents are still unaware of the issue.  We will be starting a flyer campaign on August 25th to "get the word out".  We need one or two volunteers per street to distribute flyers advertising this website and any pertinent information available by the 25th.

Please click on the following link to see if your street is listed.  If it isn't consider volunteering a few minutes of your time to help.

August 5, 2008

Thank you to all of our residents who were able to join us at the Mendon Town Hall on Monday, August 4, 2008.  The Board of Selectmen, after careful consideration, voted to deny the End Zone's application for adult entertainment.  The End Zone is not in the adult entertainment overlay district.   The Zoning Board of Appeals would need to review the application and determine whether the End Zone would be granted a Special Permit for Adult Entertainment.  The applicant may take it to the ZBA and if so we will post that hearing on this website.

However, Oak Tree Suppy turned in a completed adult entertainment application to the town on August 1, 2008.  The Board of Selectmen must either schedule a public hearing within 45 days or direct the applicant to the ZBA for a special permit.  There will be a BOS meeting on Monday,  August 11th at the town hall to discuss these options.
